French Far-Right Senator Stéphane Ravier Convicted in Conflict-of-Interest Case
Stéphane Ravier, a French senator associated with the far right, has been convicted by the Court of Appeal in Aix-en-Provence and sentenced to six months’ suspended imprisonment and one year of ineligibility for public office for illegal conflict of interest. The ruling, delivered on 10 February 2026, upholds an earlier conviction at first instance.
Conviction for Illegal Conflict of Interest
The court found that during his tenure as mayor of Marseille’s 13th and 14th arrondissements, Ravier improperly used his position to secure a series of temporary municipal contracts for his son. French prosecutors classified the conduct as prise illégale d’intérêts or in english the unlawful use of public office for personal or familial benefit.
The sentence includes:
Six months in prison, suspended, and
One year of ineligibility, preventing him from holding elected office during that period.
Ravier has announced that he will appeal to the Court of Cassation, a move that may temporarily suspend the enforcement of the ineligibility sanction pending review.
Separate Proceedings Underway
In parallel to this conviction, Ravier is also facing proceedings before the criminal court in Marseille in a separate case involving alleged favoritism in the awarding of a municipal contract for the redesign of the district’s official website. The case reportedly involves a relative, Sandrine D’Angio.
Political Background
Ravier has been a prominent figure within France’s far-right political landscape. He previously belonged to the Rassemblement National (RN) and later aligned himself with Éric Zemmour’s far right movement Reconquête. In 2024, he left that formation but has continued to support far-right candidates in local political contests.
The conviction places renewed attention on standards of political integrity in France, particularly as local and national electoral cycles approach. It also highlights the legal risks faced by public officials who blur the boundaries between personal relationships and public responsibilities.
