Italy Tightens Security Policy After Turin Riots
Following the violent riots of January 31, 2026 in Turin, in which more than 100 police officers were injured, the Italian government approved an expedited package of security measures on February 4, 2026. The unrest erupted during a demonstration in support of the social center Askatasuna, which had been evicted in December, and escalated into heavy clashes with police after nightfall.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced measures including preventive detention of up to 12 hours before demonstrations and tougher penalties for violent offenders. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the measure does not undermine freedom but is intended to safeguard public order.
Opposition parties and civil rights groups argue that the expanded powers risk undermining the constitutional right to assembly. The crackdown comes just days before the opening of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games on February 6, 2026, as Rome seeks to prevent further unrest.
