Survey: 1 in 5 Europeans Prefer Dictatorship
A new survey cited by Politico suggests that democratic commitment in Europe may be weakening: roughly one in five Europeans say that, under certain circumstances, a dictatorship could be preferable to a democratic system.
The polling, conducted across multiple EU member states, indicates that while a majority still supports democracy, a significant minority expresses openness to authoritarian alternatives. Support for dictatorship is reportedly higher among younger respondents in some countries and among those who express frustration with political institutions, economic insecurity, or dissatisfaction with how democracy functions in practice.
Although most Europeans continue to endorse democratic governance, the findings point to growing disillusionment and underline vulnerabilities within Europe’s political culture at a time of increasing polarization and geopolitical tension.
